In Japan it is also known as the Japanese fox dog. It is small in size, but very energetic and excitable. They are suspicious of strangers and will bark, and they are loyal to their owners. It is particularly sensitive to what is happening around it and is alert and keen, so it is very suitable for keeping at home.
The original Japanese Pointer is said to be a large white German Pointer, which was brought to Japan via mainland Siberia and northeastern China around 1920. Subsequently, in 1925, Japan imported two pairs of white Pointers from Canada, and continued to import related breeds from Canada, the United States, Australia and China until around 1936, when the offspring of these dogs were crossed to produce a better breed. It can also be called the Silver Fox, so named because of its resemblance to a fox. The body is compact and well-proportioned overall. The beautiful body shape gives this dog an aura and nobility, giving it a sense of elegance. However, it is very sensitive to noises and prefers to bark. The body proportions are good, with a ratio of 10:11 between height to shoulder and length.
The dog's head size is in harmony with the body length, and the nose is small, round and black. The teeth are white and strong, and the eyes are large, almond-shaped and dark, with black eyelids. The ears are positioned high, relatively small, triangular and erect.
The neck muscles are firm; the back is straight and short; the loin is wide; the chest is wide and deep; the ribs are naturally expanded; the belly is naturally folded upward; the tail is positioned high, of appropriate length, and lifted over the back.
The outer coat is straight and well supported; the lower coat is short, soft and dense. The undercoat is short, soft and dense. There is a very beautiful trim coat from the neck to the shoulders and off the forehead, and the tail is also richly decorated with long trim hairs.
The pure white coat looks very eye-catching and resembles the Satsuma so much when it is small that many people have trouble distinguishing between the two. The biggest difference between the two is the mouth, as the Satsuma's mouth is wider and shorter than the Silver Fox, and the meat on both sides of the mouth is thicker than the Silver Fox. The Satsuma is smart, lively and energetic, sensitive to its surroundings and quite alert and intelligent. The dog will be wary of strangers and behaves by barking, so it is a good watchdog. He is friendly to children and other pets, so he is also suitable for the family.
There is no good solution to this barking problem, as it is in the nature of this dog to do so. But it will not bark for no reason, most likely because something scared it and made it feel uneasy to bark. And like barking is also a sign of timidity and easy restlessness, so you can give it some comfort and reassure it when it barks, so that it may be able to quiet down.
