Native to Turkey, it has lived in Turkey since the Babylonian period (2800-1800 B.C.). Once upon a time, this dog was used as a military dog, but now people use it to herd sheep. It is unparalleled as a guard dog, and its specialty is protecting livestock. Expression: Appears to be very intelligent and clever.
Eyes: Medium sized, widely separated, almond shaped, dark brown to light amber in color. Blue eyes or two eyes of inconsistent color are out of order. The circles of the eyes are black or brown, and there is no laxity or drooping of the eyelids. Insufficient pigmentation is a serious defect.
Ears: The position should be higher than the top of the head. The ears are V-shaped with rounded tips and about 4 to 6 inches in length. The length of the ear tip should hang right down to the outer corner of the eye. The ears should be droopy and the standing ears are out of shape.
Skull: Large, but in proper proportion to the body. There is a slight wrinkle in the midline, from front to back, from the stop to the back of the head. The male dog is wider than the female dog.
Muzzle: Darker, the muzzle of the male dog is a little more sturdy. Neither male nor female dogs should have a rude head or muzzle.
Noseglasses: Both noseglasses and lips must be black or brown. Seasonal discoloration is allowed. Insufficient pigmentation is a serious defect. The upper lip is appropriately compact, but sufficient to create the appearance of a "rectangular" muzzle.
Teeth: Strong, healthy teeth and gums. A clipped bite is ideal, but a pincer bite is also acceptable. Broken teeth are not treated as a defect. A protruding upper jaw bite or a protruding lower jaw bite and a twisted bite are considered disqualifications. The Annatto Shepherd has probably been around for 6,000 years and has impressed people with its size and has always played an important role as a Turkish shepherd against invaders. The Anatu Shepherd's loyalty, independence, and sturdiness are three of the traits most appreciated by breeders.
The dog was first introduced to the United States in the 1950s. He was a very loyal guardian dog, but was not considered an "attractive breed". The Anatolian Shepherd has earned the praise of its owners for its high level of intelligence and loyalty to its work, but its independent nature has made it slow to respond to commands.
This breed is characterized by being tall, strong, powerful and impressive, with great stamina, yet very lively and agile. Bred for a very practical purpose, the general appearance of this breed is brave, but calm, except when provoked, and it has ample bone mass, a muscular body and a sturdy head. Protection of territory is allowed, and smooth movement and a calm temperament are virtues to be promoted.
