One of the oldest sheepdogs in England and an extremely attractive family dog, its primary use in the early days was for chasing cattle and sheep in the marketplace. This dog is very attractive, with a rich, dense coat, but not overly so, and a muscular, strong body. The English Ancient Sheepdog has a flowing, fluffy coat that not only shows his noble status, but also protects him from the harsh climate, and the male has a collar coat while the female does not. The male dog is masculine in appearance without being unnecessarily aggressive. The female has a gentle temperament, but her body should not be weak. The female's back can be slightly longer than the male's.
The English Shepherd should not have an excessively long back, as it may result in a weak back that is unable to do its normal work and loses its value as a working dog. At the same time, however, a body that is too compact for a trailing pet dog can be very detrimental. Breeders should take a compromise and aim to produce such an ancient shepherd: lively temperament, medium build, body not too long but muscular, not too deep in the chest and with well extended ribs, strong neck, straight forequarters and very strong loin. The English Ancient Shepherd's face cannot be seen in its natural state. This dog is large in size; strong in bone; robust in physique and appears to wobble when walking, with a very cute appearance.
Adult shepherds in general do not like to run and jump around, but they are a naughty little guy when they are young.
The young collie is active and has lots of energy. When someone is home, he can be so good that you can ignore his presence and never bark. When you are doing something, it will not say a word and watch, or sleep on all fours. However, if no one is home, it will rebel, its destructive ability is simply comparable to the "Qi Tian Da Sheng" of the Palace of Heaven. They are physically active, like to chase objects that move, but also the home of things lying around. If you don't let it go to bed, it will jump up and down and roll around a few times when you are out, and when you get home from work you may find poop and urine all over the floor and a lot of shredded newspaper ...... which requires strict discipline from the owner.
When the ancient shepherds get bored, they will try to tear and destroy something, which is really distressing for those who do not have time to train them. But when you think of training an Old Spaniel as a game, you will have fun with it. The English Ancient Shepherd, bred as a working dog, has performed well in obedience trials.
The English Ancient Shepherd is friendly, loyal, calm and considerate, they love to be close to people and are always eager for human companionship, even with strangers.
The Ancient Shepherd always has an optimistic and cheerful attitude towards life, very eager to please, full of affection and full of love and loyalty to his owner and family. If you are a busy owner and can't be with him often, the gentle and easy-going shepherd will easily feel lonely. Whenever you come home, the herd will come running to greet you at the sound of a noise, and it will lick you with its big mouth to let you know how happy it is to have you back; no matter how long you have been away from home, its enthusiasm for you will not diminish. When you are doing something, it will not say a word to accompany you and watch you; when playing outdoors with family members, it can also be equally integrated into the family atmosphere, especially like to be with children.
When it comes to handling strange dogs, the Ancient Shepherd also behaves very friendly and gentlemanly. However, when attacked, they are also immediately ready to defend themselves and fight back quickly.
It is worth mentioning that the gentle and friendly temperament of the Ancient Shepherd does not detract from the fact that they make good guard dogs.
