Alias German Shorthaired Pointing Hound, German Shorthaired Pointer, of German origin, originated in the 18th century, is a universal hunting dog, a multi-purpose gun hunting dog, able to perform a variety of difficult tasks in the water and on land. The head is well defined, neither too light nor too heavy, and the body is in proper proportion. Eyes: Medium sized, full of intelligence and expression, very cheerful, but also radiating energy, neither prominent nor sunken. The shape of the eyes is almond-shaped, not round. The preferred color is dark brown. Light yellow eyes are not ideal and are in defect. Eyes that are too close together are defective. Greenish gray eyes or eyes with a color ring in them are out of character. Ears: Wide and positioned fairly high, lying flat, never hanging on the head. They should be positioned somewhat higher than the level of the eyes, and the ears, when lying forward and flat, are not pulled by any force and extend naturally to the corners of the mouth. In the case of heavier dogs, the ears are correspondingly longer. Excessively long or excessively thick ears are a defect. Head: Moderately broad, slightly arched at the sides, while slightly rounded at the top. The German Shorthaired Pointing Dog gives the impression of being of medium size, and his stature is neither exaggeratedly small nor outrageously large. The dog is a very smoothly coordinated, well-proportioned animal that appears to be very responsive. His early use was trained for work, and because of his amiable nature, many people now keep him as a family companion dog.
The German Shorthaired Pointing Dog is a friendly, intelligent and helpful dog. The first impression is of a dog that is enthusiastic and eager to work, without any signs of nervousness or attempts to escape. This dog is friendly with children, other dogs and any household pets. They can also perform the duties of a watchdog. They are quiet, dependable, and disciplined, and are neither shy nor overly excited. This makes them a good family companion dog. The German Shorthaired Pointing Dog is a large, versatile dog that was bred for work in the early days, but is now a common family companion. His coat is short, thin and hard to the touch, making it relatively easy and convenient to care for.
