As the name implies, this dog is a former working dog with a black and brown coat, originally from the United States, and is also known as a "tree catcher" because they often drive raccoons into trees.
The Black and Tan Coonhound is essentially a working dog, a hunting dog that tracks and drives prey into trees, requiring him to be able to withstand the cold of winter and the heat of summer, and to adapt to complex terrain conditions while working. Primarily used to track raccoons and herd them into trees, the Black and Tan Coonhound relies solely on his sense of smell to perform his tasks, and his traits and courage as a coonhound allow him to also track large game such as deer, bear, and cougar. These situations above are of great concern to judges when evaluating his strengths and weaknesses. The general impression is one of strength, agility and alertness. One of the immediate impressions given is a very powerful, rhythmic pace that gives him plenty of speed. The head is neat and free of wrinkles. The head is ovoid in its entire outline. The expression is alert, friendly and enthusiastic. The ears are low and set back, long and drooping. The eyes range from chestnut brown to dark brown and are round. The nostrils are open and the nosepiece is black. The drooping upper lip is very well developed, showing a typical hound look. The front limbs are straight and the hind limbs are strong. The toes are sturdy and domed, and the pads of the feet are thick and sturdy. The tail is sturdy and freely upraised. The coat is short, dense and smooth. The color is overwhelmingly black, with an additional 10-15% brown markings, which generally appear above the eyes, on the sides of the muzzle, on the chest, on the legs, under the tail, and on the feet. The Black and Tan Coonhound is used as a working dog because he is very energetic, very alert, friendly to people, and although usually mild-mannered, he becomes a tenacious tracker once he smells prey.
He will howl when driving prey into trees. It has also been used successfully in hunting bears, deer, opossums and mountain lions in complex terrain. It can endure harsh winter cold and summer heat. They are also known as "tree catchers" because they often drive raccoons into trees. Hunters recognize and identify them by their different barking sounds. He relies entirely on his sense of smell to perform his tasks, and his very powerful, rhythmic pace makes him very fast.
He is calm, likes to go out and is friendly. As a hound that works on his sense of smell, he should be able to work closely with other hounds, allowing for reservations, but never shy or vicious. Attacking humans or other dogs is a defect. Note: Since he is a hunting dog, scars are a sign of honor and are not a defect.
