The head is in proportion to the body. It should look strong and robust. The head should have a strong structure with a moderately wide, strong head. It is well-proportioned when viewed from the side. The head consists of two planes. The back of the head to the muzzle is separated from the corner of the eye. The hind head is well developed. The forehead is flat and has a distinct but ill-defined stop. The male's head is clearly masculine, while the female's is softer.
The ears are well placed, rather small and triangular. The front edge should be close to the cheek. The length of the ears should reach the outer corners of the eyes. The ears are defective when they are low on the head. They should not be cropped ears.
The eyes should be of medium size and dark in color. The eye frame is black, with no drooping or transient marks. Eyes are oval in shape. Light colored eyes are a serious defect. Nose is large and dark. The nose is not black. The front legs are straight and well muscled, and the hind legs have well muscled thighs and adequate bone mass. The paws are large, compact and round. The pads of the feet are thick and hard. The fingernails are short and black. The rear wolf paws should be removed. The tail is positioned high, thick and broken, leaving 3 to 5 tail bones. No points will be deducted for not breaking the tail.
Messy double coat. The outer coat is coarse in texture. The undercoat is thick and soft. The length of the coat ranges from 1.5 to 4 inches and covers the entire body. The coat is messy, but not wiry or curly. Grooming: Dress up this breed in shows with a clear appearance; the dog can be groomed but should not show a deliberate look; the hair inside and outside the ears should be groomed and the ears should lie flat on the head. The color of the Black Russian Terrier should only be black or black with very little gray. Any other color is out of character.
Movement is free, with fluid, easy, brisk movements. The movement should be balanced and smooth. As the Black Russian Terrier moves faster, the feet will converge on a center line.
