Originally from the United States, it originated in the 19th century and was originally used for coon hunting, but now many people keep him as a companion dog. Coonhounds all have hunting instincts, and they can easily be trained to sniff out hunting dogs or chase prey that has fled to the trees. The Redbone Coonhound, however, is one of the more sound and complete of all coonhounds.
Raccoons are also found in the southern U.S. state of Georgia, and local people knew that there were hounds that specialized in hunting raccoons, so he was bred for trials in hopes of breeding a new breed of local coonhound. Finally, the Bloodhound was mated with the ancient Irish Hound, and the Redbone Coonhound was finally bred out of the blue. This dog has dark, affectionate eyes and a dense, soft coat; the coat is often a single shade of almost red, which is why it is called the "Redbone Coonhound".
The head is clean and well-proportioned, typically with a spot between the upper forehead and the nose, and long, hanging ears to the tip of the nose as the dog sniffs the ground on the move.
The tail is held high when hunting, with short red hair. The personality of the Redbone Coonhound is very similar to that of the Black and Tan Coonhound in that the dog shows great interest and patience when working as if the hunt were a game. The personality is very cheerful and lively, and cautious in all matters.
Although some Redbone Coonhounds have white on the feet or chest, this elegant and affectionate dog is the only pure color coonhound. Coonhounds all have hunting instincts, and they can easily be trained to sniff out hunting dogs or chase prey that has fled toward the trees. Like other Coonhounds, the Redbone Coonhound is charming and agile. They are capable of hunting in all weather conditions and in all terrain conditions. They can make an amazingly delightful loud bark full of deep emotion. Puppies adapt well to family life if they are raised in a home. Robust and agile, confident and tenacious, his grace and docility make him a lovely companion dog as well.
