The coat of the Pekinese is long, white, yellow and brown; the legs are short and the body structure is compact; the head and face are broad and flat, the eyes are large and round, the muzzle is short and upward; the ears are hairy and folded down to the sides of the head; the large front and small trunk and the long hair on the neck make it resemble a small male lion. They have a strong desire for expression, intelligent, lively, and love to play with people's affectionate characteristics. It is an ancient dog breed that originated in China and has been around for thousands of years. The Pekingese is a well-balanced, compact dog with a heavy forequarters and light hindquarters. It has a personality and a strong desire to express itself, and its image resembles that of a lion. It represents courage, boldness and self-esteem more than beauty, grace or refinement.
The Pekingese has now become one of the most popular companion ornamental pets in China, and among the ornamental pets owned by the public, the ownership of the Pekingese has reached a significant proportion, conservatively estimated to be more than 30% of the total number of dogs owned.
Kyobas are mostly owned by ordinary people, except for a few professionals, so most of the dogs are mixed breeds, except for a few pure-blooded ones. Almost all Pekingese in China are mixed breeds. The head is broad, flat between the ears, with a deep frontal segment, a wrinkled muzzle, short and wide, and a prominent lower jaw. The eyes are large, dark, protruding and round. The ears are heart-shaped, high, pendulous and richly decorated with hair. The nose is broad, short and flat, black. The carapace is short and powerful, with a broad chest and flat back. Limbs short, forelimbs curved outward, hindlimbs light and steady. The tail is high, lying on the back to the side of the body, covered with long, straight and richly ornamented hair. The coat is long and straight, drooping, not curled or wavy; the trim hairs on the legs, tail and toes are long and plentiful, with a beautiful mane around the neck and under the shoulders. The earliest records of the Pekingese begin in the 8th century during the Tang Dynasty. This ancient dog was only allowed to be kept by the royal family from the time it was first recorded, and any private citizen who dared to keep such a dog would be sentenced to imprisonment. According to historical records, there were cases of people being sentenced for smuggling Pekingese during the Tang Dynasty, and the emperor would be buried with the dog when he died to ensure that he could return to the afterlife together.
