The Cairn Terrier is very popular, warm and loyal to its owner, making it both an excellent working terrier and an ideal family companion, and should be trimmed regularly as its natural coat tends to be messy and affects its appearance.
The Cairn Terrier is very loyal and can sometimes be jealous of petting. Therefore better suited for families with older children, some of whom are noisier. Heat and cold tolerant, they make excellent guard dogs. The Cairn Terrier is intelligent and devout and is favored as an excellent family pet.
